...One who knows the world through Drumming
One who knows the world through drumming Drumming is universal; it's
experienced in all facets of life. Drummings' foundation is rhythm
and rhythm exists in every living entity. The sounds from traffic,
pedestrians, birds, waves all make rhythms, sometimes apparently and
other times not so.
Drumming is a cross-cultural experience and plays an important role
in the development of a cultures, art, ritual and history. It brings
people together, from various walks of life, as a supporting, supported
group; creating a sense of community and belonging.
Each individual adds their integral part towards the greater whole,
all the individuals and all their parts are equally important to building
a solid foundation. This foundation is rhythm and it exists in all
types of drumming. This inherent quality of drumming makes it easy
for us to create, since we are born with our own personal rhythms;
our breath and heartbeat.
Drums come in various shapes and sizes and are made from a variety
of objects, man-made to nature-made. The drums we will primarily use
are Djembes and Doun-Douns from West Africa.
The technique we'll learn from is called "Say it and Play it".
The workshops will focus on polyrhythmic drumming. This is drumming
that involves multiple rhythms coming together to create a more complex
rhythm. The classes will include, breathe work, physical warm-ups,
techniques on the drums, rhythm vocalization and rhythm. We end each
session with a cacophonous group composition based on listening and
supporting using percussions as well as drums. These workshops are
designed to suit the needs of the individual as well a group.
Schedules
