Lokavidu
...one who knows the world through Yoga
Yoga is the unity, harmony and oneness that exist in all things. In
Sanskrit there are over two hundred meanings associated to the word.
The meaning we most associate with Yoga is "to yoke", to
bring together and to unite. This unity is two fold. On one level
it involves becoming aware of our true selves, under all our facades
and fears. On the other it is to experience the unity with all other
beings and finally with the divinity within.
The great Yogic sage Patanjali begins his Yoga Sutras with the line
that gives us the clue to discover the above-mentioned truth. "Yogah
Cittavrtti Nirodhah", this beautifully simple aphorism states that Yoga is
to relieve the fluctuations of the mind. Once the mind is stilled,
we then begin the journey toward the goal of self- discovery and a
deeper understanding of our true nature.
In our journey through Yoga we'll experience various aspects of this
ancient study. In the modern world Yoga has been categorized into
a variety of names and "styles".
We will focus on the classical Astanga Yoga, emphasizing Yama, Niyama,
Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhayana, and Samadi. In our
practice of Asanas we'll concentrate on alignment and the importance
of breath within our practice. The only pre-requisite for a study
of Yoga is to understand the questions that occupy the silent moments
in your life.
