In this period of our evolution we are in the fortunate position of being on top of the food chain; having all our basic needs met. This fact has allowed us to improve our means of housing, nutrition, clothing and educating ourselves.

With these advancements our lives have become fast and sometimes quite furious. Many responsibilities are placed on each individual to continue at this ever-growing pace of life. Stress levels and billions of dollars spent on health care issues, are on the rise. At times our lives feel out of control and our minds cluttered with myriad of thoughts. Life as we know it has become complicated and confusing.

All these factors make us unhealthy, unfocused and unproductive. Fortunately we are are still in possession of the knowledge to take control, slow down, de-stress and unclutter our lives. Yoga and Drumming are that knowledge; one gives us a sense of inner calm, while the other enables us to interact with others.

Incorporating these two disciplines to enhance the workforce is becoming a norm in corporate environments. Yoga allows employees to slow down, introspect. While Drumming gives them an opportunity to work together as a team in a fun relaxing way. Companies such as the Heinz Corporation, Barclays Bank and Vodafone have used these activities as part of team building retreats and seminars.

In the past I have designed programs that include a morning of Yoga followed by an afternoon session of Drumming. The benefits of Yoga and Drumming as a team building tool are truly realized when they are incorporated into the theme of the seminar/ retreat. Within these two traditions exist all the necessary attributes that make one a healthy, productive, employee and a member of society.

The Yoga program will include Yoga postures, for strengthening, flexibility and restoration of fatigued glands and muscles.

For the Drumming we will employ the "Say it and Play it" method of drumming, introduced to the west by a Nigerian master drummer Babatunde Olatunge. This involves vocalizing rhythms then transferring them to drums and percussion instruments.

YOGA
The main function of Yoga is to still the fluctuations of the mind and bring about single-minded focus. A secondary benefit of Hatha Yoga is a toned, flexible and healthy body. These can be achieved by a program of regular practice of physical postures (asanas), breath control, breath regulation (pranayama) and meditation. Once a focused mind and a healthy body have been achieved, then life and all its tasks can be attended to with clarity and creativity. It is at this point one becomes a happier, productive individual for themselves and those around them.

DRUMMING
The main feature of polyrhythmic drumming is the incorporation of several simple rhythms supporting each other to create a more complex rhythm. This is achieved when all the musicians play their parts with precision and clarity. All the parts and their players are essential to building a solid rhythm and a supportive cohesive ensemble. And it is a marvelous fact that no musical experience is necessary to build such rhythms. The benefits of drumming include the ability to focus, working together as a team and having plain old fun! The workshops can be designed to the specific needs of the client. Below is a suggested program for a one day workshop, it can however be expanded to a week, week-end or as an on going process:

The Drums we will use are West African Djembes and various percussion instruments. All instruments will be provided. For Yoga , blankets, chairs and an uncluttered room, will be required.
